I'm not sure if this is the same name or not, but the door read, "Dutch Country General Store" replacing Ben Franklin I believe they said.
Extremely large, spacious store with wonderful signage all over to find things quickly.
Free popcorn & free coffee while we leisurely check out the entire store.
large selection of puzzles, candy in silver bins is still arriving but there are choices.
homemade cookies, breads, chocolates with nuts, caramels, cheeses,jams, popcorn/herb seasonings, and so much more.
i bought a carmel/walnut log; it's so delicious with free popcorn & watching tv! it's so good, you just can't stop eating it.
they have a covered bridge entrance to the puzzle/restroom area.
it's a must see and give yourself a good 30 minutes looking at everything they have.

Every time I go in here, Im amazed at all the amazing things Shirley has for her customers. This time I stepped in the door and there they were--2 beautiful sets of candles, one green, one gold, shaped like many petaled chrysanthemums. Just gorgeous. And reasonably priced. She has a dibs and dabs of everything.
Some lovely silver jewelry, scarves, scented creams, antique dishes, a candy counter where I buy chocolate cashew grizzlies for my husband every time I make the 250 mile drive to see my sister.
She always has interesting clothing in most sizes. There are tee shirts for local sights. She carries several lines of figurines. And if seasonal is your wish, you can find that as well.
Shirley and Mildred, the resident gold fish in the antique punch bowl, always know when shoppers are reading the cards for sale by the chuckles.
I never miss a chance to visit the Mercantile in Winterset each time I come east to see my sis.

Great variety of useful daily-use items as well as gifts, cute & unique decor...and chocolates! You could spend a few hours in this store just browsing around at all the various things, and you'll likely leave with more than you expected to buy! Shop local at this wonderful unique store on the square in Winterset. And, the owner was very friendly and shared some local history of the building and her own experiences there over many years. I will come back to downtown Winterset, and to Madison County Mercantile for sure!
